We Make Change Work for Women

WOMEN'S MONTH

March has become known as a time to celebrate all that it means to be a woman. To acknowledge equality, and to celebrate the many strong, smart, confident, innovative, talented and beautiful women out there in the world. There is power in femininity, in sexuality, and in all types of appearances and perspectives. We hear from women from different backgrounds, industries, and life experiences to understand why this month means a great deal to them.

In the Philippines, the Women’s Month Celebration has since served as a venue to highlight women’s achievements and discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments. The celebration focuses on concrete activities that are aligned with national and international instruments and treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025), the Framework Plan for Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

This is why we celebrate International Women’s Month - to celebrate how far we have come and understand how far we still need to go towards gender equality. This month, we highlight women and the things we have achieved. I feel that this plays a big role in empowering each other (especially the youth) and making the men recognize the contribution we have in society.

The Philippine Commission on Women invites advocates of women’s rights to sport purple clothes or accessories every Thursday to show their support and join the call to advance women’s rights and gender equality and end discrimination against women. Women are the primary caregivers of children and elders in every country of the world. International studies demonstrate that when the economy and political organization of a society change, women take the lead in helping the family adjust to new realities and challenges. They are likely to be the prime initiator of outside assistance and play an important role in facilitating (or hindering) changes in family life ching.
